A wide range of property investors, developers, estate agents and architects are expected at the Build Green conference in Bucharest, Romania, which opens on Wednesday April 23.

The two day conference features international speakers and is expected to draw more than 250 high-profile public officials, consultants, representatives of technology and service providers, non-governmental organisations and research institutions.

Participants will address ways to build environmentally friendly and energy efficient buildings, which are of growing importance in an environment of rising prices.

In the limelight will be subsidies, preferential financing and other incentives available for green buildings. Innovations in green design and planning, technologies and building will address what is needed. Also big on the agenda is the integration of renewable energy solutions in buildings and green urban planning.

'Within a context of rising energy prices, more stringent building codes, new technology and innovative financing, now is an opportune time for top companies to participate in the spectacular construction growth of the region and a mounting desire for better construction and energy efficiency,' said a spokeswoman for organisers SOPOLEC.

Central and Eastern Europe is keen to be at the forefront of environmentally friendly building in order to attract more foreign investment in a region that is often regarded as one where not enough attention is paid to the environment.

'The idea that regulations regarding the environment don't apply in this part of Europe is outdated,' said Harish Neoman, a property agent based in Bucharest. 'The environment is becoming as vitally important as it is elsewhere.'
