One of the largest ever re-generation projects in the UK has been given the go-ahead and is set to transform Bristol into one of the most sought after areas in the already popular south west of the country.

Bristol City Council has got the green light for its development of a 187 acre former airfield in the south of the city at Hengrove Park. Situated four miles from the city centre and eight miles from Bristol airport, it is ideally suited for many kinds of projects.

The first phase of redevelopment at the site will include a hospital, leisure centre, skills academy, 250 homes and the headquarters of Computershare, the world's only global share registry. Work starts next month.

It is being described as the UK's largest new green urban open space and will include a nature reserve.

'Hengrove Park is the centrepiece for a massive regeneration programme designed to transform south Bristol. It will transform South Bristol into one of the most sought after places to live, work, invest and play in the south west and deliver significant economic benefits for the West of England and the south west region as a whole,' said a council spokesman.

Property consultants in the city predict there will be plenty of opportunities for investors. 'Not only will there be new properties but the headquarters of an international company means rental opportunities too. This is excellent news for those interested in this part of the country. The development has good links to motorways and Bristol airport. It is going to be very exciting,' said David Sykes, an independent consultant based in Bristol.

Agent Mark Worthington commented: 'South Bristol is an excellent location. We are pleased that this exciting project is underway.'
