Today marks start of frenzied property selling season in the UK, new research says

The survey carried out by 24/7 estate agents Purplebricks, found that over a quarter of respondents, 28%, had in previous years successfully sold properties between the 01 May and the end of June.

It also found that of those who sold their houses previously during this period some 67% sold for the asking price or above, indicating the fast paced nature of the property market during this time.

The least popular time period to sell a property is January and February, a time typically seen as when most people will make big changes in their lives, however it seems that making a property change at this time is most definitely not a priority for the majority of UK residents.

‘It’s interesting to see that May and June are the most popular times to move house, and the impact that this is having on the property market in terms of achieving asking price offers,’ said consumer expert Sarah Willingham founder of Letssavemoney.

‘Whilst property sales have been buoyant so far this year it is clear that sellers during the early part of the year are still recovering from the Christmas excess, so financially are not in a position to move. Many people also feel that their property will be more marketable in the summer months and may result in them achieving a higher price,’ she added.

According to Michael Bruce, chief executive of Purplebricks, it is not surprising to see that May and June have been revealed as the most popular months to move house. ‘With the lighter nights and the brighter weather properties can be more aesthetically pleasing and potential buyers are much more motivated to be the first to view whatever time of the evening,’ he said.

‘What I do find interesting is the pressure that people are obviously feeling to complete their transactions during this eight week period. May and June provide a natural let off from many of the other pressures throughout the year such as school holidays, summer breaks and Christmas, and it appears that people are really taking advantage of this, however the stress associated with selling your property can be alleviated if sellers use the right type of agent and understand how best to market their property,’ he added.
