The appeal follows his reform-minded party’s electoral victory.
The International Olympic Committee will choose the host city in Copenhagen on October 2.
Rio de Janeiro, Madrid, and Chicago are also in the running with US President Barack Obama strongly supporting the American city’s bid.
‘We’d appreciate it if the prime minister will join us as our final presenter at the IOC session,’ the Japanese Olympic Committee president Tsunekazu Takeda has been quoted as saying.
‘We have already consulted the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) about this idea,’ added Takeda, also vice president of the Tokyo Olympic bid committee.
Takeda added that he was also soliciting the presence of his imperial highness Crown Prince Naruhito.
Hatoyama will be formally elected prime minister on September 16 when parliament convenes. His party holds 308 seats in the 480-seat lower house.
The DPJ strongly promotes people-first politics and is in general antagonistic to large public spending, including property, programmes.
Takeda said, ‘Mr. Hatoyama is very aware of the importance of sports and has no objections to an Olympics in Tokyo.’
In Tokyo’s metropolitan assembly the DPJ is apparently considering reviewing plans to build a 100,000-seat stadium which it sees as excessive investment.
