Housing minister sacked and government struggling to find new one

Housing minister Rachel Maclean has been sacked as part of the reshuffle – but Rishi Sunak is reportedly struggling to find a new one.

Several MPs including Jeremy Quin, member of parliament for Horsham, are reported to have turned down the role, while Kemi Badenoch and Michael Gove are apparently unhappy with Maclean’s removal, The Times reports.

Her sacking comes a day before evidence sessions for the Renters (Reform Bill) start, while the move will mean we’ll have 16 housing ministers in 13 years.

Maclean wrote on Twitter/X: “I’ve been asked to step down from my role as Housing Minister.

“Disappointed and was looking forward to introducing the Renters Reform Bill to Committee tomorrow and later the Leasehold and Freehold Bill.

“It has been a privilege to hold the position and I wish my successor well.”

This latest housing minister change begs the question once again why the role is a junior one, given that it results in there being such a revolving door around the position.
