Landlord scheme launched in Scunthorpe after false start

A selective licensing scheme in Scunthorpe has launched following a failed landlord challenge.

Landlords in the Crosby & Park and Town wards must now have a license to rent their properties, costing a total of £995 over a course of five years.

The unveiling of the scheme hasn’t been smooth, as it was originally due to launch on 20 March but was delayed after the Crosby Landlords’ Association challenged the cost of such a scheme.

It will run until March 2030.

Councillor Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This is about raising the quality of housing and the quality of life for residents – things that matter in every community across North Lincolnshire.

“Too often, poor standards and neglect have gone hand in hand with anti-social behaviour and a loss of pride in communities. That changes today.

“The vast number landlords who do the right thing have nothing to worry about – they help drive up standards and support better, stronger neighbourhoods. But those who ignore their responsibilities will be held to account. Everyone deserves a decent home in a decent area.”
