A guided tour around the Republic of Cape Verde – Part 3, Santiago

Home to half the Republic's population, Santiago is the largest and most African island of the archipelago. It is also home to the Republic's capital city, Praia, a small but sophisticated community coming into its own. It is an oasis of entertainment, fine dining, upscale hotels and shopping as well as boasting 15 foreign embassies and consulates. Santiago has a spectacular mountainous interior, the highest point being Pico d'Antonia at 1392m. The coastline has numerous sandy beaches, the best being at Sao Francisco and Tarrafal, 80 kilometers to the north.

Property Market

The property market on Santiago has in the past 3 years primarily revolved around the excellent Sambala Village development close to Sao Francisco Beach. With a more diversified and greener terrain, many people think Santiago will become an exclusive upmarket island with quality developments and golf courses. Nick Faldo is currently building a golf course close to Cidade Velha, the original capital of Cape Verde and also a World Heritage Site.

Vila Jardins de Oceano is a small development of 40 villas nearby which are in a lovely location. Sao Francisco beach is one of the best on the island, and the superb new Morabeza Resort is just launching in a stunning location on the beachfront. The new international airport has also opened on the island and this will have a major impact on tourism levels.

Prices for a 2 bed apartment in the Morabeza Resort start at 161,000 euros, 2 bed townhouses in Sambala Village start at 189,000 euros and 3 bed villas in the new Fogo Villas location in Sambala start at 310,000 euros.
