The Phoenician port of Asilah is so popular with the Spanish, French and British that the tourist office is seeking people with some command of all three languages. 'We are a seaside resort and now firmly on the tourist trail. We have seen the number of inquiries soar from these nationalities,' said a spokesman.
Asilah is also between Tangiers and Rabat which are also massively popular with the Spanish, French and British.
'Since the Spanish have discovered this area real estate prices have soared,' said Leigh Fergus, of International Living.
Visitors are attracted by Asilah's Portuguese built fort, cobbled streets and restored Medina. It is popular with artists and craftsmen and hosts and international festival every August which includes dance, music, art and film.
'It has all the signs of a place going somewhere. There are newly painted wooden shutters, orange trees and bougainvillea and whitewashed walls. It is a very attractive place,' added Fergus.
Bargains can be found as there are a large number of old properties for renovation with prices starting around £50,000. Many have original Moorish tiles, central courtyards and in the old city sea views.
For those interested in more modern property there is plenty of choice in Tangiers and Rabat. But Asilah won't stay tranquil for long. There is a small beach apartment development currently for sale.
'Asilah is one of these places that won't stay relatively unknown. It is just 20 minutes from Tangiers and becoming more and more popular with foreign visitors and investors,' said James Darlington who works for an estate agent in Tangiers.
He says inquiries are increasing for other fishing ports including Safi, Saidia, Melilla and Essaouira.
