New homes boost in New Zealand

The rise last months shows that the trend for new homes is continuing, according to Statistics New Zealand said. But new apartments are not as popular.

‘The trend for new houses continues to grow, whether or not apartments are included. The number of new houses consented has been trending up for almost two years and is now 53% higher than the most recent low point in March 2011,’ said Blair Cardno, industry and labour statistics manager.

‘This trend for the number of new houses, including apartments, is now at its highest level since May 2008,’ he added.

Consents for new homes, including apartments, have increased by 24% compared with February 2012. On their own, new houses increased by 18%.

The largest increase in the number of new houses was in the Auckland region, up 51%, followed by Canterbury with an increase of 35%.

The seasonally adjusted number of new non-apartment houses fell 3.6% in February 2013, after 9.5% growth in January.

Earthquake related building consents in Canterbury totalled $35 million in February 2013, including 55 new houses. This is the lowest monthly total since April 2012.

The figures also show that the value of non residential building consents fell by 25% to $285 million, compared with February 2012.
