English people prefer detached houses, survey suggests

New research shows that a detached house the property most people cite as their dream home and they would rather have a flat than an historic mansion.

Nearly one in five, 19.3%, of those surveyed by mortgage and loan broker Ocean Finance said that the type of home they hope to own one day is a detached house.

Some 12.9% dream of residing in a bungalow and 6.5% a flat or apartment  while just one in 6.1% of respondents said that they dream of living in their own castle or historic mansion in the future and a converted barn or church is the least popular at 5.6%.

However, while based on this it would appear size does not matter to the average UK adult, location clearly does. Some 17.2% aspire to owning a little cottage in the country, 15% a farmhouse with land and just 4.7% a city townhouse or terrace.

Across the UK the most popular choice overall is a detached house, but in the East Midlands and Yorkshire more respondents plump for a cottage in the country at 18.1% and 16.9% respectively.

Meanwhile, in Northern Ireland, the South West of England and Wales, a farmhouse with smallholding is the most popular choice at 22.2%, 19.9% and 21.9% respectively and in the North East of England most people dream of one day owning a bungalow at 19.1%.

‘Rates of home ownership may continue to decline but the idea of owning our own place remains deeply engrained. Typically we have fairly modest aspirations preferring a detached house to a ‘Grand Design’, for example,’ said Ian Williams, spokesman for Ocean Finance.

‘And while most of us live in urban areas, the draw of rural living in the chocolate box country cottage remains very strong,’ he added.
