Bellway has acquired a parcel of land in Axbridge, paving the way for a new development of 53 homes, subject to detailed planning permission.
Outline planning permission for the 3.2-acre site off Houlgate Way has already been approved by Sedgemoor District Council, with Bellway planning to submit a detailed application this summer.
The planned development is set to comprise 38 four and five-bedroom properties for private sale, alongside 15 two, three and four-bedroom affordable homes available for local people through shared ownership or rent.
The development would also include landscaped public open space, including a children’s play area and car parking for the local medical practice.
Sam Sowden, Land Director for Bellway South West, said: “This land acquisition forms part of our strategy for growth as a division, following recent land purchases in Willand, Tiverton, Hilperton and Crediton, as we aim to help meet the rising demand for new housing in the South West region.
“The land off Houlgate Way is in a highly sustainable location for new homes in Somerset. It’s just a short walk from the centre of Axbridge, ensuring that the town’s shops and facilities are within easy reach of residents, while also offering a quiet edge-of-countryside lifestyle close to the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
“Having completed the site’s purchase, we are now finalising our detailed plans for the development prior to the submission of our reserved matters application, which we hope will be in August.
“We are looking forward to working alongside the local authority to realise the potential of this land, and to help provide the homes that are needed in this popular part of Somerset.”
Bellway South West is currently building new homes at Peregrine View in nearby Cheddar, as well as at other developments in Somerset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Devon.
