The $1.1 billion project in Dubailand, which also includes a luxury boutique hotel, a restaurant run by top French chef Guy Savoy and a residential complex with palaces, mansions and villas, is due to be completed next year.
The initial phase, Al Ruwaya, an 18-hole par 72 course with a driving range and a Tiger Woods golf academy, is on track to be completed sometime in the first quarter of 2009. The hotel and residential community is expected to be ready by the end of 2009.
Tatweer, the company behind the project is interested in developing similar projects in other countries in partnership with Woods. A spokesman said new projects will depend on the Dubai development's success.
It is the golf star's first foray into real estate and he will own a property within the development. The key part of the development is the golf course. Only members or hotel guests will be able to use the course as the developers want to protect the project's exclusivity and privacy of residents.
Membership of the golf course will be around $250,000 per year and there will only be 200 members at any one time.
A clubhouse is also being built, and construction has been completed on level two. The operator of the hotel will be announced during Cityscape Dubai next month.
The landscaping is as vital as the architecture of the buildings. The total development will have 30,000 trees, with 200 already planted and 6,000 in the nursery. Around 400,000 shrubs are being brought in from South Africa, Australia, India, Thailand and the US.
The course is set to be challenging. 'When I set out to design Al Ruwaya, I wanted the course to reflect what I truly love about golf – a stern mental and physical test that rewards smart thinking. I believe we've achieved that goal with a course that will be fun and rewarding for all skill levels to play,' Tiger Woods said.
