Southampton and Basingstoke to see rapid second home growth in next two years

Southampton as well as Basingstoke & Deane are both expected to see a 37% increase in second homeowners in 2020 and 2021, Swinton Insurance has predicted.

Other strong areas are expected to be Brentwood (35%), Newcastle-under-Lyme (27%) and Warwick (25%).

Between 2010 and 2018 Croydon in London has seen the biggest increase (6,529%) in second homes in the UK, followed by Cannock Chase (1,650%).

There are far more second homes in Greater Manchester, with Rochdale (1,048%) were Manchester (917%), Salford (550%), Bolton (419%) all seeing a big rise.

West Dunbartonshire in Scotland has seen the biggest drop in second homes, with a decrease of -98%.

In the research Swinton included buy-to-let, as well as long-term empty homes and holiday homes.
