How the market has changed after Covid-19

Now the market is emerging from the doldrums there are different patterns to before the lockdown.

The early signs are there’s more competition for homes than flats. Meanwhile more people are hankering to live in a home with plenty of outdoor space.

After spending hours sitting inside you have to say these revelations make sense.

In and around London, and other major cities for that matter, you wonder if more people will move further from urban centres to commuter towns, which surely offer a better lifestyle for working from home.

It perhaps depends on the policy of individual companies regarding how long this work-from-home culture will continue – if employees are instructed that they will likely work remotely for the rest of the year surely more people will move further out to more comfortable digs.

Focusing more on the rental market, for tenants living in shared accommodation some may want to move into their own place. Speaking from my personal situation, living with housemates isn’t always easy when everyone’s stuck at home. You get to know people well when socially isolating with them, for better or worse.

Anyway, there are signs that normality is slowly returning.

Today sees the housing market in Wales reopen, albeit with strict rules around leaving properties vacant before moving. This follows the Northern Irish market returning last week, while Scotland will follow suit on the 29th June.

It could be a busy few weeks in these markets, owing to pent up demand from people unable to move for the past few months.

Hopefully this is the tonic to get the markets moving again, as people hunt for that green space to make life that little bit more comfortable.
