The Qatari government has committed to the construction of a city to improve living conditions of many of their workers. They are investing $1.1 billion into property construction for the whole city which will be around two square kilometres in size.

When the city is complete, it will be able to house 50,000 Qatari workers.

By the year 2010, the Qatari government will have built a labourers' city capable of housing up to 50,000 of the workers responsible for building the country. This state of the art development will cost a total of $1.1 billion and comes with all of the amenities. The new development comes as a response to the many criticisms that the Gulf-Arab state has received regarding the living conditions of workers. The city will contain all of the comforts of home. Covering almost 2 square kilometers just outside of Doha, workers will have access to mosques, playgrounds and even shopping malls. More importantly, Qatar is planning to include modern health care facilities along with police and fire stations.

The Qatari government realises that this is not a cure all for the housing crisis, but states that it's a start. Human rights groups are often concerned when a government plans to build accommodations for the working class. Ibrahim Yousef Fakhroo the Executive President of the shareholding firm Barwa Al Baraha states that workers will enjoy living conditions well above those dictated by international standards. Work on the two phase project will begin next month which includes most of the major amenities and worker accommodations.
