Welsh estate agency Blackbear has acquired Welvan Estate Agents in Neath, expanding its network to seven branches less than two and a half years after launching in Pembrokeshire.
The acquisition coincides with Welvan’s 25th anniversary in the local residential sales and lettings market. Welvan’s principals Ceri and Howard will remain with the business alongside the existing team as the agency transitions to Blackbear ownership.
Two of Blackbear’s directors were born and raised in Neath, adding a local connection to the strategic expansion.
Rapid expansion across Wales
Blackbear director Simon said: “Welvan has spent 25 years building a trusted name in Neath. That reputation, and the people behind it, are what made this such an attractive opportunity for us.”
He added that retaining the existing team was central to the acquisition strategy, aiming to combine local market knowledge with Blackbear’s brand and branch network.
Blackbear launched in Pembrokeshire in 2024 and has expanded through branch openings and acquisitions across Pembrokeshire, Swansea and the Vale of Glamorgan. The growth mirrors recent agency expansion activity in the UK property market.
Business partners and future plans
Former Wales international and British & Irish Lions scrum-half Gareth Davies, who plays professionally for the Scarlets, is one of the firm’s business partners.
Davies commented: “To reach seven branches in less than two and a half years is something we’re very proud of. We’re now competing across a growing part of Wales with agencies that have been established for decades.”
He stated the firm’s ambition is to build a Welsh estate agency network with local market expertise at its core, with the Neath acquisition forming part of that strategy.
The expansion comes as the Welsh property market continues to develop its regulatory framework, with industry discussions ongoing around rental market regulations and tenant access requirements.
Financial terms of the Welvan acquisition were not disclosed. The Neath branch will operate under the Blackbear brand while retaining the existing staff and client relationships built over the past 25 years.
