Tony, 49, has been the chief executive of FTSE 100 water company Severn Trent Plc since 2007, prior to which he worked in senior management positions for British Gas and Transco.
He brings to the Grainger Board wide operational and strategic experience of working for major, consumer facing companies with multiple stakeholders and sites across the country.
Wray is considered independent on appointment under the provisions of the combined code.
He is currently an independent non-executive director of Energy and Utility Skills, the sector skills council, and is a member of the Business Advisory Board for Living with Environmental Change.
