Located 20 miles east of Santiago, Maio is a tranquil and almost forgotten island with vast, deserted white beaches and only 6000 inhabitants, the majority of whom live in the capital, Vila do Maio. The island was historically a trading hub due to its prolific salt resources however tourism is emerging as the primary industry and Maio is quietly developing with bars, restaurants and sympathetic property developments being constructed.
As well as Maio being an attractive location for tourists, other species such as sea turtles and humpback whales visit the island’s waters frequently.
Property Market
The local market on Maio has been a little slow since the airport closed 6 months ago for renovation. It is due to re open shortly and we expect the market to pick up again then. It is a beautiful white sandy beach island with very little infrastructure at present and is definitely an island for relaxation.
There are a few small restaurants, hotels and bars but there are plans for several developments in the future. Even though Maio may take longer to move forwards than some of the other islands, it has tremendous potential and a lovely lazy, laid back atmosphere.
Prices for a 2 bed villa start at 145,000 euros and a 3 bed from 175,000 euros. Studios can be found from 45,000 euros.
