Port Saeed to receive $7 million

The total area of the development will be 1.39 hectares.

A proposal for a Dhs26.8 million ($7 million US dollars) development and beautification project in the Port Saeed area, currently known as Port Saeed Plaza, was recently approved by the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is the Chairman of Dubai Municipality, UAE Minister of Finance, and the Deputy Ruler of Dubai.
The announcement of the plans approval was made by the Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah. Lootah stated that the goal of the project is to turn what is currently a concrete open space set in between a number of high rise buildings into a serene park and green space for residents to unwind.

"This project is unique and first of its kind undertaken by Dubai Municipality in the central business districts of the city. It effectively puts to use a total of 1.39 hectors of land (13,893 square meters) for the benefit of the residents in the neighbourhood," stated Mr. Lootah.

Mr. Lootah added that construction of the development would begin very soon and the projected timeline is one year for completion. "The project comprises of demolition of the existing temporary car park area and construction of a plaza which includes shaded multi-purpose space that can be used on festive occasions and celebrations, an open-air stage which can host musical events, exhibitions, folk-performances, heritage activities…etc., a function lawn, shaded play areas, water features and a 200 meter jogging track," he announced.

Other than the multi-purpose performance space, Mr. Lootah also indicated that the development would have two gallery buildings, children's play areas, and other planted landscapes.

This development of mixed-use green space open to the public is relatively new to Dubai. With so much building construction in the city, parks such as these are very rare. However, it is yet to be seen exactly what sort of impact this development will have on the real estate both adjacent to the property and also any properties within walking distance. Also, with this development approved, other relatively open city spaces may become earmarked as additional open community space.
