Registered property sales fell back in England and Wales in February

Over 85,000 property sales were registered in England and Wales in February, down from the previous month but up compared with a year ago, official figures show.

A total of 85,249 sales were lodged with the Land Registry, down from 116,795 registered in January but above the 76,327 recorded in February 2017.

Of these the biggest number, some 22,462 were for terraced houses which are still the most popular in the UK, followed by 20,725 semi-detached properties, 19,174 detached homes and 17,842 flats or maisonettes.

Some 61,237 of the sales were freehold properties, a 3.7% increase on February 2017, some 16,133 were newly built, an 11.8% increase on February 2017.

There were 378 sales of residential properties in England and Wales for £1 million and over of which 216 were in Greater London, two were properties in Cardiff and one in Greater Manchester.

The most expensive residential sale taking place in February 2018 was of a terraced property in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London, for £10,750,000. The cheapest residential sale in February 2018 was of a terraced property in Chester le Street, County Durham for £19,000.

The most expensive commercial sale taking place in February 2018 was in the City of London, for £75,972,945. The cheapest commercial sale in February 2018 was in Macclesfield, Cheshire, for £250.
