York’s The Shambles has highest ‘iconic street’ premium

It costs 958% more to buy property on York’s iconic The Shambles compared to the surrounding area, meaning it has the highest ‘iconic street’ premium, Bankrate research has found.

It costs £3.12m to buy on the narrow medieval street, compared to £295,000 nearby.

Many of the buildings on the street date back to the fourteenth and fifteenth century, while the name The Shambles comes from the meat markets that used to be located on the street.

Oxford Street in London commands the second highest premium, where prices are 374% higher than in the surrounding area, at £6.24m compared to £1.32m.

Queen Square in Bath has the next highest premium, which has average prices at £1.82m, 318% more than the £435,000 average nearby.
