Industry conference attendance remains low among estate agents

Estate agents in the UK continue to show limited attendance at industry conferences, despite opportunities for professional development and networking, according to observations from veteran property professional Simon Bradbury.

Bradbury, who has worked in the sector for over 40 years, recently attended the two-day eXp conference in Birmingham and noted a pattern of low participation from estate agents across various industry events. The conference featured speakers including business experts, an economist, and presentations on artificial intelligence applications in the property sector.

Barriers to attendance

Three primary reasons emerge for non-attendance among estate agents. The most commonly cited objection relates to perceived relevance, with some agents questioning what speakers from outside the immediate property sector can contribute to their business practices. Time constraints represent the second most frequent reason, with agents citing diary pressures as a barrier to participation.

Cost remains the third factor, though Bradbury notes that many UK property conferences range from free events to approximately £500 in ticket costs. Property Academy offers several no-charge events, whilst international equivalents can cost three to four times UK conference prices.

Industry development opportunities

The conferences typically include exhibition areas where suppliers present services and technology solutions to attending agents. Presentations from practising estate agents sharing operational experiences form a core component of many events, alongside contributions from business specialists and industry analysts.

Networking opportunities at these gatherings allow agents to exchange information with colleagues from different geographical markets. The events are typically scheduled months in advance, allowing for advance diary planning.

The pattern contrasts with attendance rates in other countries, where self-employed agents frequently pay higher fees to attend similar professional development events. The observation raises questions about professional development priorities within the UK estate agency sector, particularly as industry bodies continue to consolidate and evolve their training offerings.

Market context

The discussion comes as the UK property sector faces ongoing challenges, with economic conditions affecting market activity and agents seeking competitive advantages. Professional development through industry events represents one avenue for agents to adapt to changing market conditions and technological developments.

The question of conference attendance reflects broader considerations about continuous professional development in the estate agency sector, where formal training requirements remain less structured than in some comparable professions.
