Unearthing Roman Ruins on the Blue Coast

Tróia has been considered an area rich in Roman history ever since the 16th century and excavations in its Roman Ruins were commissioned by Queen Maria I of Portugal in the 18th century. Significant archaeological discoveries include marble pieces like inscriptions, friezes and sarcophagi, coins, ceramic and glass pieces from the day-to-day of populations from the Roman Empire.

The area was declared a National Monument in 1910 after houses, baths, a Christian basilica and several necropolises were found along with the most important fish-salting industrial complex in the Roman Empire.

Now, centuries after its discovery, Sonae Turismo, the developers of Troiaresort, have hired an archaeological team to interpret and preserve the site while developing Troiaresort into an international resort destination.

"Tróia is a site of great historical and local importance, adding a unique magic and charm to the resort," says Charles Roberts, Sales Manager of IRG Portugal, the exclusive affiliate of Christie's Great Estates who is selling the development. "Owners and guests will be able to visit the Roman Ruins and learn more about the local history, which is being preserved so it can be enjoyed by many generations to come."

"The Blue Coast has seen its popularity rise in recent years, as people discover the area's numerous charms. From historical sites to vineyards, and golden beaches to golf courses, the area has much to offer second home buyers."

A region of vast natural beauty, the coastal countryside of the Tróia peninsula is framed by impressive mountains in the nearby Arrábida National Park and clear waters of the Sado Estuary.

The 440-hectare resort development encompasses Tróia's world famous 18-hole championship golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior, a tennis centre, equestrian centre and a 184-berth marina.

The Central Area of the resort will be the hub of the development, featuring a casino, a five star hotel plus numerous restaurants, bars and shopping facilities. At the Beach Area, residents can relax on golden beaches or enjoy a wide range of leisure activities and water sports including jet skiing, surfing and scuba diving.

With a flight time of around three hours from the UK to Lisbon and transfer time of 30 minutes, Troiaresort is an ideal destination for short or long breaks.

Golden beaches, sparkling blue seas and warm a year-round climate, combined with the number of amenities and property management services onsite, make Troiaresort stand out both in concept and class.
