More engineers needed for heat pumps to take off

Ed Miliband

There’s a shortage of qualified engineers able to partake in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), where people get a grant of up to £7,500 to cover the cost of replacing gas boilers with heat pumps.

That is according to Tom Coverdale, head of design at heat pump manufacturer Ebac, who wrote about the issue to Ed Miliband, the secretary of state for energy security and net zero.

As it stands there’s a need for increased support and public awareness to ensure the success of heat pump initiatives, while there’s a need to dispel myths around the technology.

Meanwhile the process for the public to access funding need to be streamlined.

So far there have been 35,741 applications to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Last December, the previous government announced £1.5 billion in additional funding for the BUS extension over three years.

However Coverdale said there’s a lack of public knowledge of the scheme, meaning a government campaign is essential to help it reach its potential.

Miliband has supported green energy initiatives, saying he wants to make heat pumps more economically viable for the British public.
