Stoke-on-Trent in the West Midlands is the most affordable place to buy in the UK based on the average salary in the area, comparethemarket research has found.

If you compare the average house price to the typical salary in Stoke-on-Trent it stands at 498% – so you can buy for less than five times the average salary.

Other reasonable areas are Dundee in Scotland (526%), Sunderland in the North East (553%), St Helens in the North West (567%) and Blackburn (571%).

There’s a clear North-South divide when it comes to affordability in England.

When looking at the ratio between earnings and house prices, the North East (x6.11), North West (x6.77%) and Yorkshire & and Humber (x7.72%) are the cheapest,

London is the least affordable (x15.34%), followed by the South East (x11.87%), East (x11.45%) and the South West (x10.85).
